Lazlo's Corner

So recently I have seen an influx of musicians using pay for review sites, where for a fee a site will write a review about you on their site, play your song on their station, etc.

Please don't get pay these sites for this stuff. It is called payola, and it is at the very least unethical, but possibly illegal (you can Google "payola" and read all about the scandals over the years and how Alan Freed's career was ruined while Dick Clark testified against others... and well you know what happened to him... side note, this is one of many reasons I was not a fan of Dick Clark. I also hated that artists lip-synced on his programs) (<-- sorry for the run-on parenthesis, that probably should have been a footnote)

But back to my point. There are plenty of small & large sites to get your music reviewed, played, etc., by people who respect your music and are not just writing a review because you are paying them (which gives the review zero cred if anyone bothers to check the source... which many in the industry do). If a place wants you to pay for a review or to get played, follow the immortal words of Nancy Regan, "Just say no!" (I can't believe I just quoted Nancy Regan in this column, but that quote makes a lot more sense in this context than the original context of it)
