Lazlo’s Corner

Over the weekend I attended the CD release party for Jon Caspi & The First Gun and The X-Men, both of whom just released albums on the new Brighton Bar Records.

What was great about the evening, besides the music (which was awesome!), was the true spirit of community. Something I used to see more of, but don't so much these days.

It is possible I don't see it as much because I don't get to as many shows as I used to...and honestly I hope that is the case.

There is nothing like seeing musicians from various bands getting up and singing and playing with other acts, which happened during Jon Caspi & The First Gun's set, where members of opening acts Sir Dove, The Catholic Girls, and The Extras, Inc., performed along with the band. Not only is it fun for those watching, but it also may help introduce others to bands they might like that they were unaware of.

Also, you can truly see the joy that everyone involved is having.

Thinking about this just reminded me of one of my favorite live shows I've seen in my lifetime. Back in 1995 I saw the package tour of Soul Asylum, The Jayhawks, Victoria Williams, and Matthew Sweet. These artists got along so well together that they came out and guested during each other's sets, sometimes without the artist on stage expecting it. It was so memorable, so fun, and just one of those nights where everything aligned into a beautiful thing.

Saturday at the Brighton Bar was kind of like that.

Of course these types of things cannot be forced...but it really is something special to see when it happens.
