Pissed Off!

Dear Hollywood,

Please stop doing remakes of perfectly good (or in some cases, bad) films.

This obsession with remakes and reboots has gotten out of control in recent years, and just last week I read of three unnecessary remakes.

First off Hollywood plans to do a PG-13, "family friendly" (their words), remake of the Toxic Avenger. While this may in fact work, you are missing the whole point of the original Toxic Avenger series. The films were not good films, BUT, they were funny, and full of lots of gratuitous nudity and gore. I suspect there are a lot of pissed of Tromaphiles out there right now.

Second Brett Ratner (whose name may as well be synonymous with craptacular, suck-ass films), is planning to do a remake of House Party without Kid 'N Play. What's the point???? House Party was all about Kid 'N Play, it was a terrible movie otherwise.

Here's an idea Hollywood, and you can have it if you like, put Brett Ratner and Michael Bay on a deserted island with a bunch of lipstick cameras to film what happens. I guarantee the reality will be more entertaining then any movie either of them have made. And watch out James Cameron, the only reason you aren't on that island to is a few good films you made back in the 80's.

The third remake I read about last week has me so pissed off I don't even know where to begin with how wrong it is.

Ron Howard's production company has decided to remake Real Genius. Yes, the cult classic 80's film with Val Kilmer, the same film that indirectly gave me my nickname of Lazlo that most of you know me by.

The original Real Genius is a cult classic, beloved by most people old enough to remember it, but here's a tidbit I'll bet many didn't know. Real Genius only grossed 13 million at the box office. Now granted, by today's standards that would probably be nearly 30 million (adjusting for inflation and inflated ticket prices). But a remake would probably cost around that to make, and what's the odds on the remake being as good as the original? Slim in my opinion.

Oh and what currently popular band will get to do a crappy cover of "everybody wants to rule the world" for the end credits?

With very few exceptions, Christopher Nolan's reboot of Batman for instance, remakes or reboots are about as bad an idea as Greedo shooting first. But don't get me started on George Lucas.

In fact, stick Lucas on that island with Ratner and Bay.

P.S. - Not all films need to be in 3-D either! It's a gimmick, and shouldn't replace an entertaining story.

------------------------------

That's all for this week folks.

Peace,
Lazlo
