Concert Picks Of The Week

Lazlo (BlowUpRadio.com)

This weekend is all about Asbury Park, and the 4th annual Wave Gathering. 3 days (Fri-Sun), over 20 venues, and over 175 bands, this is THE music fest for NJ. Info and schedule is up at www.WaveGathering.com

Jim Testa (Jersey Beat)

All eyes should be on Asbury Park and the Wave Gathering this weekend but here are two great shows if you're not going to be in Asbury:

Friday, June 19
ROADSIDE GRAVES, Any Day Parade, Dan Maxwell & His Band, Federale - Court Tavern, 124 Church St. New Brunswick - 10 pm, $6, 21+

Saturday, June 20
SCREAMING FEMALES, Invincible Gods, Thomas Francis Takes His Chances - Court Tavern, 124 Church St. New Brunswick - 10 pm, $6, 21+

Gary Wien (Asbury Music)

This weekend is one of the most solid festival weekends of the summer. From Thursday night through Sunday night, the Wave Gathering Festival takes place throughout Asbury Park with over 180 bands including a virtual who's who of the New Jersey music scene. Saturday, June 20 also marks the date for the Southern Shore Music Festival in Millville featuring Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Arlo Guthrie, Bonerama, Hoots & Hellmouth, Eilen Jewell, Nora Whittaker, 61 North, and Nik Everett. Also on Saturday is Jamfest3 in Jackson with 25 bands on two stages. The hardest part is going to try figuring out how to be in three places at once...

Pissed Off!

I so want to discuss the closing of The Goldhawk, another great NJ venue for live music, & one that (along with Jim Testa), I used to do ‘Folk You!’ shows at.

I want to talk about that, but I can’t.

You see, I have been seriously following the events going down in Iran.

It’s easy to forget about how lucky we are to have freedom and democracy in this country, and the ability to peaceably protest when we disagree with our government (as many did with the Iraq war).

While the American news channels are finally starting to do some coverage of the events in Iran, BBC News has been doing the best news channel coverage I’ve seen.

But truly compelling, and horrifying, is the first person accounts coming in through the internet, most notably through Twitter.

The link below is a list of all know people Twittering in and around Iran about what is going on.

http://www.simoncolumbus.com/2009/06/15/english-language-twitterers-in-iran

I urge you to look through some of the tweets people are posting from Iran.

If they don’t make you feel lucky to live in America, then you probably don’t deserve to live in America.

That's all for this week folks.

Peace,
Lazlo
