Message From Lazlo

Hey Everyone,

So this is it, the big 5th anniversary celebration is this Saturday at the Saint. Hard to believe it was 5 years ago I started BlowUpRadio.com with the hopes my friends would listen and I could expose them to local bands they wouldn't otherwise be interested in seeing. A strange thing happened, some of my friends listened, but so did a whole slew of other people. Over 5 years, we've grown a lot, and I look forward to celebrating the growth of BlowUpRadio.com with all of you on Saturday.

But before I get into how cool this party is going to be, there are 2 new things on BlowUpRadio.com I want to mention.

On Friday I recorded a brand new installment of BlowUpRadio.com on the 'Pod. Go download it for free and give it a listen. Lots of great local music on the show, which can be listened to anywhere, on an MP3 player, burn it to a CD, or listen to it on your computer.

~~~~~~~~~~
As mentioned last week, the innaugaral BlowUpRadio.com Sessions with Jim Testa is running all this week on the webcast at 8pm ET. Tune in to hear a great interview and performance by Boxcar Nancy's frontman, John Raido.
And speaking of Boxcar Nancy, they will be part of BlowUpRadio.com's 5th anniversary party at the Saint this Saturday.
The party starts at 8pm sharp, and in addition to the 5 bands performing (who I will get to in a second), my wife will be baking more cookies and cakes (as she recently did to everyone's enjoyment at a Folk You! show), free while they last (so show up early), and we'll be giving stuff away all night.
That's right, door prizes being given out all night long. Lot's of free CDs, rare BlowUpRadio.com T-shirts, and more!
But the coolest thing about this party are the bands involved:
Boxcar Nancy
'Boxcar Nancy is John Raido's new band, and John Raido sings love songs. That said, the tunes on Turning 'Round are like Forrest Gump's box of chocolates: Pick one out and you're never sure what you'll get. From the head-bobbing Bringing It All Back Home-style rock 'n' roll of "That's All Right" and (my personal favorite,) the almost Clash-like punkadelic grind of "Everybody's Feeling Fine," to the delicate acoustic picking on the title track, "Turning 'Round," to the sweet country waltz of "Blind," to the fresh funky vibe of "Groovy #14," to the Harvest-like melancholy of "Blue," the album abounds with tasty confections guaranteed to please the discerning indie-pop fan.' - Jim Testa (Jersey Beat)
Souls' Release
Rising from the ashes of their former projects, Souls’ Release is a phoenix for its members. Founded in 2003, this New Jersey based quartet brings forth rock & roll as it should be: powerful, emotional, truly driven from inside. Joshua Van Ness, Nick Ferriero, Jonathan Andrew, and Sean Calcamuggio work together to create some of the most refreshing rock music of their generation. Fusing elements of classic rock, funk, grunge, and more, the band has truly developed a sound of their own. Souls’ Release spent the better part of 2004 touring extensively in the Northeast, Southeast, and Midwest regions of the US. The energy and sincerity of their live show sparks an undeniable connection between band and audience. It is exactly this pure quality that is winning the band fans all over the country.
The Marbles
The Marbles played their first official show way back in 1984.The band was formed by its’ guitarist, singer and songwriter Mike Grau.The Marbles are and always have been a three piece, a power trio. The Marbles bassist John Haussmann (formerly of The Fabulous Lesters) and drummer Mike Saroski (formerly of The Cherry Pickers) represent the absolute finest example of “chops” on their chosen instrument. The Marbles have played everywhere over the years and have shared stages with The Gin Blossoms, Dramarama, X, The Stranglers, The Ramones, as well as a million local genius bands who have unfortunately disbanded over the years. The Marbles have been called “The worlds only 6 piece 3 piece” and their live show was once described as“ Rock, pop, melody, and a dash of psychedelic charm thrown burning from the roof of a building into a club near you.” The Marbles have always loved what they do and refuse to stop while that feeling is alive.
Particle Zoo
Described as ‘60s-influenced Brit-pop and ‘80s-inspired new wave/post-punk, PARTICLE ZOO fuse catchy melodies and smart lyrics into an ever-evolving indie rock sound. This summer featured the release of a full-length album, the first for a band that has been gaining attention for several years, earning praises for their superlative songwriting skills and electrifying stage show.
Spiraling
The New Jersey-based quartet Spiraling (keyboardist/vocalist Tom Brislin, bassist Bob Hart, guitarist Marty O'Kane, and drummer Paul Wells) gained national exposure with its self-produced independent release Transmitter. Of course, it is on stage that Spiraling is at its best, and the group has spent much of the past year on tour, winning over audiences from Maine to Texas to California. Over that time, the group has developed a reputation as one of the East Coast's best independent bands, a status confirmed by featured spots at the South by Southwest and CMJ music festivals, as well as high-profile gigs with marquee acts such as OK Go, They Might Be Giants, Violent Femmes, and Rooney, at venues including the Bowery Ballroom and Irving Plaza. Buoyed by this success on the road, Spiraling returned to the studio in 2004 with a renewed focus. What resulted is Challenging Stage, arguably Spiraling's most compelling and kinetic effort to date. While it showcases the sophisticated songcraft and airtight musicianship that the group's fans have come to expect, Challenging Stage finds Spiraling rocking with a new sense of determination and verve.
So come out Saturday for the social event of the year, and help celebrate 5 years of BlowUpRadio.com ~ Where NJ Rock Lives!
Peace,
Lazlo
Mike K - 'the verge ep'
Been writing songs since I started playing guitar (after hearing Nirvana for the first time, I decided, of course, that playing guitar is what I must do) because I was never good at learning other artists' songs. The colorful tapestry of influences I hang over my bed include Nick Drakey songwriters, Aphex Twin electronics, and Smashing Pumpkins soul crushings - intro/extrovert, small sounds/big sounds, elated/destroyed dichotomies. Melody is uber important...
“Holiday Heart” Double-CD Set Sold to Benefit Saint Barnabas Hospice ...
What does a collection of “eclectic, friendly, alternative-ish holiday music” have to do with a hospice program? According to Spiro Ballas, Senior Volunteer Coordinator at Saint Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Center (SBHPCC), his holiday music compilation entitled “Holiday Heart” goes a long way toward spreading cheer, raising awareness about end-of-life care, and generating funds to benefit people and families dealing with advanced disease.
He explains, “Hospice gives tremendous support to patients and families during one of the most challenging times of their lives. It’s a form of healthcare that’s underutilized, mostly because people don’t know about it. We’re raising both awareness of and funds for, our non-profit program through the sales of ‘Holiday Heart.’”...(more)
